<p>Creating an online business can be very profitable if done the right way &#8211; but unfortunately, too many entrepreneurs fail to understand how to build a <em>proper</em> online business. In fact, most entrepreneurs make at least one of the five most common mistakes that can completely destroy your online success.</p>
<p>I know this because for many years I saw no success with my online business&#8230; It was only years later that I realised I was a victim to every single one of these five mistakes. You know how they say that failure is really just a lesson? Well trust me, life is a lot easier when you can avoid failures.</p>
<p>My journey in digital entrepreneurship started in 2008 &#8211; I took a course, learned a bunch of stuff, applied it, and saw ZERO results. So I took another course, learned more stuff, added it to the last stuff I learned, and still saw no results!</p>
<p>The story stayed the same until 2012 &#8211; 4 years of trying, thousands of dollars spent on products and training, and no rewards for my efforts&#8230; so depressing.</p>
<p>But then things started to click. I started to put all the pieces together, and just like a puzzle, I started to see the big picture.</p>
<p>I realised that things weren&#8217;t working for me because I didn&#8217;t understand the big picture from the beginning &#8211; and because I made 5 crucial Internet marketing mistakes along the way&#8230;</p>
<p>But things happen for a reason and now i&#8217;m proud to say that I can build an online business from scratch, in any niche, and make several thousand dollars per week (all in less than 12 weeks).</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s the thing&#8230; No one ever told me about these 5 common mistakes when I first started &#8211; and that caused a lot of pain.</p>
<p>So without further ado, here are the 5 most common Internet marketing mistakes</p>

<h2>INTERNET MARKETING MISTAKE #1 &#8211; Misunderstanding Perfect Buyers</h2>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-801" title="Internet Marketing Mistake#1" alt="money 300x200 5 Most Common Internet Marketing Mistakes" src="http://thediaproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/money-300x200.jpg" width="300" height="200" />Most marketers fail to properly identify the Perfect Buyers within their niche, and it completely destroys their business before it even starts! This mistake alone has cost me thousands of dollars with $0.00 profit.</p>
<p>A proper analysis of your niche, and the perfect buyers within that niche, will allow you to easily find the people that are ready to pull out their credit cards and make a purchase.</p>
<p>Your perfect buyer is already having a conversation in their head. They have problems that they want to solve, and your goal as a marketer is to join the conversation and provide them with a solution to their problems.</p>
<p>The best way to identify a perfect buyer is by using two tools: the Empathy Map, and the Customer Purchasing Cycle. (more on these later&#8230;)</p>
<h2>INTERNET MARKETING MISTAKE #2 – Not Providing Multiple Offers</h2>

<p>Every buyer, no matter the niche, has multiple problems &#8211; and you need to be there to guide them (aka, provide solutions) through all of their problems.</p>
<p>This is known as the <b>“The Offer Value Ladder”</b>.</p>
<p>Let me give you an example: Perfect buyers in the &#8220;make money online&#8221; niche face several obstacles, or problems, when trying to build an Internet business: they need to learn how it works, they need a product to sell, build a website, send traffic, receive payments, etc.</p>
<p>Offering a range of products that your Perfect Buyer can consume is the key to making thousands per month. You need to be a one-stop shop for your perfect buyers.</p>
<h2>INTERNET MARKETING MISTAKE #3 – Poor Use of Auto-Responders</h2>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-813" title="Internet Marketing Mistake#3" alt="customer value 300x235 5 Most Common Internet Marketing Mistakes" src="http://thediaproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/customer-value-300x235.jpg" width="300" height="235" />It&#8217;s common knowledge that your email list is your biggest asset, but most marketers don&#8217;t understand how to leverage it.</p>
<p>For those who aren&#8217;t familiar with the power of email lists, let me break it down for you.</p>
<p>Imagine you have a sales page that converts at a reasonable 2% &#8211; meaning if you have 100 visitors, 2 of them will become customers (obviously).</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not bad, but what happens to the other 98 visitors? Do you just let them go away and forget about you?</p>
<p>Of course not! Just because they didn&#8217;t buy from you today doesn&#8217;t mean they won&#8217;t buy from you after a little more convincing.</p>
<p>Now suppose you were able to capture their name &amp; email addresses &#8211; you could follow up with them and let them know different benefits or testimonials about your offer. All of a sudden your sales page conversion increases from 2% to 4%</p>
<p>On average a person needs to see an offer 4 to 7 times before they are comfortable enough to make a purchase.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s the thing; you can&#8217;t just keep promoting product after product because people will get sick of you really quickly.</p>
<p>Your email list should be used for one thing, and one thing only&#8230; <strong>to guide, protect, educate, and provide value to the people on your list.</strong></p>
<h2>INTERNET MARKETING MISTAKE #4 &#8211; Starting with &#8220;Free&#8221; Traffic</h2>

<p>Like most entrepreneurs, I had no money when I first started building my business &#8211; so I obviously looked into &#8220;free traffic methods&#8221;. I spent a long time learning and implementing SEO techniques and here&#8217;s what I learned&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Traffic is <i>never</i> free</strong>. It will either cost you time or money. People fail to understand that an &#8220;opportunity cost&#8221; is just as valuable as money &#8211; meaning the money you <em>could </em>have made with the time you spent getting &#8220;free&#8221; traffic.</p>
<p>The issue with so-called &#8220;free&#8221; traffic (like SEO, article marketing, and safe lists) is that it takes too long to see any sort of results. To build a proper business, you need to constantly test by using traffic that will give you &#8220;instant&#8221; results.</p>
<p>That being said, SEO is one of the best traffic sources you can get because it’s organic and once you set it all up, you don’t really have to work at it anymore.</p>
<p>In order to build a profitable online business, you need to understand the different types of traffic, when to use each type, and most importantly, where to send it.</p>
<h2>INTERNET MARKETING MISTAKE #5 &#8211; Ignoring the Numbers</h2>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-817" alt="Earnings 1 jpg 475x310 q85 300x199 5 Most Common Internet Marketing Mistakes" src="http://thediaproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Earnings-1_jpg_475x310_q85-300x199.jpg" width="300" height="199" title="5 Most Common Internet Marketing Mistakes" />I know &#8211; we all hated math in high-school - but there are certain numbers in the Internet marketing world that simply can&#8217;t be ignored.</p>
<p>Together, these numbers form your Earnings Per Click (EPC). Ignoring your EPC is just bad business because your EPC should <em>always</em> be greater than your Cost per Click (CPC). Kind of like ignoring <em>revenue </em>and <em>expenses</em> in a traditional business.</p>
<p>The numbers that directly influence your EPC are are <b>Impressions, Clicks, Leads, Sales, </b>and <b>Upsells.</b></p>
<p>Let&#8217;s look at an example&#8230;</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s say you create a Facebook ad that sends traffic to a capture page. This capture page promotes free webinar, in exchange for a name and email. On the webinar, you give away great info and at the end you promote a $47 front-end offer. If someone purchases the offer, they are presented with a $197 upsell. If someone doesn&#8217;t purchase, they are placed into your email follow up sequence which promotes the same front-end offer using different methods.</p>
<p>So how would these numbers affect your EPC?</p>
<p>Well let&#8217;s assume Facebook charges you $0.40 per click on the ad, and you manage to generate 1000 clicks. Now assume your capture page converts at 25%, your webinar converts at 5%, your upsell at 5%, and your follow up at 2% &#8211; all decent numbers.</p>
<p>That means that from your 1000 clicks, you had 250 people attend the webinar, 12 people purchase from the webinar, and 4 people purchase. Because of the low numbers, you probably didnt make any upsells from these customers.</p>
<p>But does it matter? Not really, because with 1000 clicks you just made $47 x 16 = $752, and you only spent $400. In other words, your EPC of $0.75 &gt; than your CPC of $0.40&#8230; you win!</p>
<p><strong>But wait..</strong>. what if you learned a couple of tricks, tweaked your capture page, and got it to convert at 40% instead of 25%&#8230; all of a sudden you made 20 front-end sales from the webinar, 7 sales from the follow up, and 1 upsell. That&#8217;s $1,466!!</p>
<p>EPC of $1.46 &gt; CPC of $0.40&#8230; you win, twice!</p>
<p>That&#8217;s almost double the sales from just a small tweak on your capture page! That is why understanding the numbers and aiming for the right ones is so important.</p>

<p>Understanding these 5 Internet marketing mistakes is how I managed to go from failing for 4 years and losing thousands of dollars, to making thousands of dollars per week!</p>
<p>Now I&#8217;m not saying that to brag &#8211; I&#8217;m just saying that to stress the importance of understanding the Big Picture. These 5 common mistakes make up the entire big picture of Internet marketing.</p>
<p>Understanding the buyers, the offers, the auto-responder, the traffic, and the numbers is how you build a <em>profitable</em> online business.</p>
